Asking the Question: What is required?

When answering this question and considering your next step, do you think only about what’s best for you, or about what’s best for everyone involved, including yourself?

Now, consider the other view. If the answer is not “this or that,” how many perfectly good options might there be?

Some people are taught to sacrifice themselves on the altar of service to others. Almost always, the people doing the sacrificing are shamed in this instruction and the the ones who benefit from the self sacrifice of another are those judging and demanding the sacrifice.

In every circumstance where I’m pressured to act against my own interest, I ask myself what is required of me — not by others but by my own sense of what is right in that moment.
