How do elements that contrast strengthen the whole?

Black and White. Contrast. Why do we rely so much on comparison of extremes to understand?

By profession, I am a lawyer. We work with what is written in literal “black and white,” with black ink upon white paper. You might wonder then, if something is clearly written, what is the job of an attorney? Isn’t the rule just easily followed?

Ah, no. With a handful of facts and a personal perspective, two well-meaning people can read the same black and white, the same “letter of the law,” and come up with contrasting interpretations. Ultimately, judges decide and our system of stare decisis then requires other judges to follow that interpretation of the rule.

This is how contrast strengthens our whole in the judicial system. This is a story of contrast and achieving balance. For my part, I always choose to write with a BLUE pen. True Blue. Blue is the color that reminds me to carefully consider what is true.

Justice. Let it be that way.
